- Mobile ranges and city codes change; treat examples as format hints only.
- +1 covers the NANP (US, Canada, and several Caribbean territories).
How an international number is built
An international number has three parts: your exit code (or the plus sign), the destination country code, and the national number. From the United States the exit code is 011; from most of Europe it is 00; mobile phones accept + followed by the country code, which is the safest form because it works from any country. So the UK number +44 20 7946 0958 is dialled from the US as 011 44 20 7946 0958. Country codes are one to three digits and the code stops exactly where the national number begins.
The trunk prefix you must delete
Many countries write domestic numbers with a leading 0 that is dropped for international calls. A UK number published as 020 7946 0958 becomes +44 20 7946 0958; Germany's 030 becomes +49 30; Japan's 03 1234 5678 becomes +81 3 1234 5678. Forgetting to remove the trunk zero is the single most common reason an international call fails. A few countries, including the United States and Canada, use no trunk prefix at all, so +1 numbers stay as written.
Shared code systems: +1 and +7
A country code does not always mean one country. +1 covers the North American Numbering Plan — the United States, Canada and about twenty Caribbean and Atlantic territories — which is why +1 876 is Jamaica and +1 345 the Cayman Islands. +7 is shared by Russia and Kazakhstan. Codes such as +800 are not countries at all but international freephone ranges. This is why directory entries give a specific prefix like +1 809 or +7 6xx rather than a plain +1.
Dialling reliably and cheaply
Store numbers in full international format with the + so they work from anywhere and survive roaming. When testing a number, use a known landline rather than a mobile, since mobile ranges are reallocated more often. VoIP and messaging apps route to the same numbers but may want the country code without the leading +, or the local format for in-country calls. If a call fails, the usual causes are a leftover trunk zero, the wrong exit code, or a number that has been reassigned.
Frequently asked questions
- What country code is +1?
- +1 belongs to the North American Numbering Plan: the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean territories all share it.
- How do I call an international number?
- Dial your country's exit code (or just +), then the country code, then the local number without the leading trunk 0 if that country uses one.
- What is the country code for Japan?
- Japan's country code is +81. From the US, for example, you would dial 011 81 followed by the Japanese number without its leading 0.
